I like the commentary that Legend of Legaia has, in the lore a powerful weapon was created by one town to defeat another in war. Sometimes when it comes to RPGs, you need to play the first game but other times you don't really need to do that. For example, a lot of the Final Fantasy games are standalone games and don't really connect with the other ones.
