I picked up and played leaf green while on my honeymoon, just reached the water gym. Mt. Moon was a pain to go through.

Nice, yeah Mt. Moon can be a pain but did you pick up any repels before entering the cave? I think in Red and Blue you couldn't buy repels before going to Mt. Moon but they changed that in Yellow and in Leaf Green.
