I'm not specifically talking about the Cyberpunk role playing game, I want to discuss the genre within the role playing realm. There are lots of different games that fall into this genre, such as my favorite Shadow Run, but there's also a game named Cyberpunk (which is most likely the first game to be created set within this environment.

For those of you who are uninitiated, Cyberpunk is typically a post-apocalyptic dystopian setting where technology is rampant and corporations own your soul. Many characters are just trying to survive by running errands for various corporate overlords. And many of these characters have all sorts of biologically integrated technological implants that enhance the human body.

Anyway, so I got that itch again to play a truly macho character. (I was going to say bada--, but profanity). I missed playing my all-time favorite character Lindsey Shadow-what's-her-name, a Katana-wielding Covert-Ops prepubescent-looking woman with a sarcastic sense of humor who'd rather wipe the floor with your hair if you dared look at her wrongly. But as much as I enjoy Shadow Run, I don't care for it's Dice Pool system, and trying to play a game that uses a dice pool via the internet when you could be throwing a bucket of 40 dice can get tedious. So I began looking for alternatives.

Once again, Reddit saves the day, and somebody suggested NewEdo, "especially if you like anime", and this definitely caught my eye. I checked it out, and for like $12 it's now mine! I'm enjoying the fusion of Japanese mythologies and lore with the typical corporate-dystopian hell-scape. I haven't looked at the various tech or character options in detail yet (I don't know if there's an Uncouth or Neoteny aspect to choose from, for example, but hey, I'm Goddess, and I can probably just create it, right? One thing that I am really liking are the dice tricks-- at least if I'm reading this correctly. You can upgrade the size of dice (going from a d6 to a d8 or d10 for example) during character creation? There's a lot to read, and I'm still skimming the book for the first time.

So, while this game still uses a Dice Pool, it's not what I would consider a typical dice pool where you roll a crap-ton of dice and count all the sixes (on a d6). There is some medium crunchiness to this game (some minor mathematics ability is needed), but I've got a pretty wicked Dice Roller mod for my site that'll make rolling a breeze-- as soon as I figure it all out and the Developer fixes that one tiny-itty-bitty-little bug. The worst case scenario, I've got an entire pencil box filled with dice that I can roll if needed.

Not my cup of tea, but I might play one from time to time if the idea is interesting enough.

I've never played a Cyberpunk themed game before so I don't have much of an opinion. Though I suppose I would have to be in the right mindset to try a game in this genre since at times it feels a little too close to the real world lol. But I guess that's why so many people love the Cyberpunk theme! (Also I don't mind if you cuss, just not too much lol.)

I get the vibe of the setting hitting too close to home, but I think that's part of the appeal to the genre. This is the setting where you literally do get to Stick it to the Man! Cyberpunks are not the heroes that Fantasy gamers are used to. You get to engage in the wild side, that naughty bit of your repressed personality, of crap that you've always wanted to do when somebody does you dirty, but you're too civilized to regress into that type of barbarian. At least, those are the reasons I enjoy the genre. Sometimes it's refreshing to take the gloves off and let the bad attitude all hang out-- and have fun kicking serious Corp butt too.

After falling down the rabbit hole of Teenagers From OuterSpace and Mekton, I found yet another game from the same publisher, [b]Cyberpunk Red[/b]. Not quite anime-ish, but definitely Cyberpunky and looks awesome! And after watching a YouTube featuring Mike Pondsmith... I'd like totally work for this man!

I like Cyberpunk games because of the futuristic technology and its dark settings. The game's realism always makes it difficult to put down.
