Dragons could be so important to role-playing games as they introduce some level of excitement to the game. You can customize their personalities and their motive which makes it even more immersive.

I would use them as a means of scaring the party and keeping them going towards the end goal.

This is usually what we do whenever we play too. Though I would love to have a Dungeons and Dragons campaign based around Spyro the Dragon lol.
