Earthbound

Post by Ravenfreak »

Other than Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy V and VI, Earthbound is my favorite RPG on the SNES. You take control of NES, and he sets off on an adventure with his friends Paula, Jeff, and Poo to stop the evil Gigas from taking over the world. It's a very trippy turn based RPG that takes place in the 90's, with many American cultures. Heck it has one of the creepiest video game songs in existence, which is the Cave of the Past IMO. If you never played Earthbound you really should! My wife wants to watch me play through the game, I've beat it but it's been a long time. I never played Earthbound Zero or Mother 3 before.

Earthbound freaks me tf out! In a good way though, definitely the best RPG on the Super Nintendo hands down in my opinion. That Gigas fight with the mode 7 effects just gives the game more depth. I still wonder how much different the game would have been on the Sega Genesis.

Back in the days, i had the japanese version and can't remember very well the point that i quitted the game, battles were so random that i always would talk about it at school (nobody had this game in my class!) and would tell me that i was lying lol.

As long as i like fresh games other than epic battles and all that, this game doesn't meet the requirements to be a master piece. Sorry guys!

It's all good, it's actually kind of rare to see someone not really enjoying this title since many people think it's the best on the Super Nintendo. (I think Final Fantasy V and VI are better though.) The marketing for the game was poor in the United States at least, it's a very expensive game now.

I can't say it's bad because that would be a lie. But games like Chrno Trigger or Final Fantasy V, Super Mario RPG are better. The concept is good, but being "unique" doesn't make you automatically the best.

To me it's a 7.5/10 game.

Admittedly I've never played Earthbound myself, but I've watched bits and pieces of either my husband playing or speedruns on Twitch :P

Last Sunday I went to V-Stock which is a entertainment store. I noticed they had a copy of Earthbound for sale but it was well over $300. :S The game didn't sell well in the US, so any time a game store gets a copy it goes for an insane amount.

Because it's so ridiculously expensive, I resorted to buying a reproduction of Earthbound for my Polymega. Works well without issues as far as I can tell but yeah, it's certainly a timeless classic.

I thought about getting a Repro of the game. Though I might just get around to getting a Flashcart and playing it that way on real hardware. I beat it using zSNES back in 2016. (I still would like to invest in a Polymega at some point too lol.)

Earthbound is definitely a mind-twisting and very quirky experience. The Mode 7 effects have contributed charm to the game including some of the battles which are unforgettable. It's good game though!
