Wouldn’t be surprised. It has one of the most inconsistent algorithms for encounter rates I’ve ever seen. It’s a decent walk from your house to the first town, and the encounter rate can range from two tiles after your last battle to zero.

Like most NES RPG’s, you gotta do a bit of grinding to survive the next areas, and the inconsistent encounter rate can make it take longer
Sounds like we needed a modded version that fixes encounter rates.

The 25th anniversary version exists that does that, but it also introduces other problems.

Was this the version released on Virtual console? What other problems did it introduce?

The Wii U was the shelved North American release. So it’s very similar to the original release.

One of the problems introduced was that it made it a hassle to earn money. The hack increased EXP and lowered the encounter rate, but it didn’t increase the amount of money earned. So it basically took longer in this version to get money than the original with the decreased encounter rate.

Wouldn't be a true anniversary release for a game to not come with additional issues.
